Rancho Texicano: The Very Best Of ZZ Top By ZZ Top
Live In Germany features ZZ Top’s 1980 performance at the Grugahalle in Essen for the German TV series Rockpalast. Hot on the heels of their classic Deguello album, the show sees ZZ Top in their essence as the ‘lil ol’ band from Texas’ nickname in a set packed with their early hits.

The best ZZ Top Live concert,
This is ZZ Top at their absolute best. This concert is from 1980, before the fancy car, before Legs/Gimme All Your Lovin’/Sharp Dressed Man, etc. Before MTV.
This is ZZ Top rocking the blues HARD. Billy and Dusty’s guitars have never sounded better.
Run..don’t walk…run and get this DVD. Like the other reviewer, I grabbed it from Wal-Mart for $11.88.
It is hard to believe that a 3-piece band is all we’re seeing here. Absolutely brilliant.

|Vintage ZZ in TOP form,
In my humble opinion this is perhaps the peak of ZZ Top. Dequello (1979) and El Loco (1981) are my personal favorite albums and this show was recorded right between those two. This set includes plenty of the 70′s classics including “Tush,” “La Grange,” “Waitin’ For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago”, a cover of “Jailhouse Rock” and an early draft of “Tube Snake Boogie” from their forthcoming El Loco album the next year (1981), not to mention virtually all of the “Deguello” album.
These guys put out more sheer SOUND than any 3-piece band I know of this side of Rush (and the Top does it with strictly guitar, bass and drums, whereas Rush uses keyboards, synths, bass pedals and a drummer that plays like 3 people by himself). But ZZ is about more than just noise or volume. They deliver blues & boogie rock fueled with a distinctive Texas attitude and plenty of chops from all 3 players with some great songwriting and singing to top it all off! I saw ZZ Top in 1983 and thought they were phenomenal but this tops that concert. The video is from 1980, so hardly Blu-ray, but it’s plenty solid and the audio will make you think you’re in the building. So if you’re into ZZ Top at all and prefer their pre-MTV sound, this is the holy grail!
